Pow! Thwip! Snikt! The wait is over true believers! After ten long years and a few very japanese “vs” titles, we finally have a proper sequel in the Marvel vs Capcom series. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds hits on all the right spots for comic book nerds and gaming geeks, even for those who aren’t big fighting game fans.

Released on Feb. 15th, MvC3 is brawler who’s main pull is an eclectic mash-up of some of Marvels most popular characters and notable personalities from Capcom’s vast gaming rosters. The developers claim that they’ve given special attention to the story, but honestly it’s not all that important. When the villains from each universe attempt to combine the two worlds, the heros are forced to band together to confront a united foe. It doesn’t matter though, because the real satisfaction comes from seeing your favorite fictional persona pull off their signature moves!

Capcom decided to do away with the control scheme from MvC2 and bring over the fighting controls from their most recent fighting title, Tatsunoko vs Capcom. If you passed on that game, although you’d be in the majority, you definitely missed out on a spectacular fighter. TvC gives players only four main attack buttons, a light attack, a medium attack, and a heavy attack with the last button reserved for launching your opponent into the air. Most special attacks require no more than performing the good old hadouken which gamers are already familiar with from Street Fighter II. The controls are straight forward and reward those who can spend hours practicing and memorizing combo after combo. Additionally, MvC3 adds an even more simplified scheme that allows for one button special moves and even one button hyper combos. Purists will absolutely abhor this addition especially because you can compete online using the simplified mode with no repercussions besides a somewhat stunted set of moves. On the other hand, casual gamers will welcome the ability to fill the screen with spectacular moves without having to invest the time and effort it usually takes to master the game.

The list of characters, although not as expansive as previous titles, is pretty well-balanced and varied. Each hero or villain is voiced well and their individual personalities are shining examples of how to do justice to their respective intellectual properties. For instance, Ryu is always serious even while Deadpool screams, “Chimichanga!” during his attacks or pulls the life bar down and beats them with it. During any given match, each player selects a team of three people to go into battle. Marvel fans will squeal with glee when they purposely put together Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America and Iron Man exclaims, “Avengers, assemble!” This is fan service at its best and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring what other hidden phrases I could find. I am, however, disappointed with the removal of my favorite character, Megaman. Let this be my formal plea with Capcom to offer him as a future downloadable character. So far, there are two offered for five dollars each and neither of them really interested me enough to warrant a purchase. Although, that is largely a matter of personal taste. Maybe you will be more willing to pick Jill Valentine or Shuma-Gorath.

This is the first time that Marvel vs Capcom has used 3D models of its characters and they look fantastic. It gives depth and weight to the sort of cel-shaded cartoon look that really fits the over the top game play. The colorful visuals are all about spectacle. Shoulder cannons fire lasers that blast across the entire bottom of the screen while tornadoes are summoned to swell above you. It can get a bit overwhelming at times especially because things happen so quickly, but that’s all part of what makes this game so great. However, screenshots will never do it justice, you have to see this action in motion to truly appreciate it.

I’ve found a few characters to be a little too powerful (Sentinel is pretty unstoppable) and I did have some problems finding a partner to play against in a ranked online match. Hopefully Capcom should be able to fix it with a patch.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is a great buy for people who want act out their fantasies in the Marvel universe or see who would win in a fight between Akuma and Magneto.
